The Last Voice Note
Every night, she played the same voice note.
It was only seventeen seconds long.
“Don’t worry, Mum. I’ll be home soon.”
She had heard those words hundreds of times, but somehow, they still felt like the first time.
Three years had passed since her son left home. Three years since that call. Three years since “soon” became a word she was afraid to believe.
One evening, she finally deleted the voice note.
Not because she had forgotten him.
But because she had finally learned that holding on to the past was not the same as keeping someone close.
She smiled through her tears and whispered, “I hope you found peace, my son.”
Then she turned off the phone and opened the front door.
For the first time in three years, she allowed herself to look forward.
