Nobody talks about what happens to your React Native app when the internet disappears.
Built the SeaRebel MobilePilot — a marine navigation iOS app. Boats go offshore. No signal. App still needs to work.
Here's the offline architecture that saved us:
Realm + MongoDB Atlas Sync
Most people reach for AsyncStorage or Redux Persist. We didn't. Here's why:
❌ AsyncStorage — no sync, no conflict resolution, you build all of that yourself ❌ Redux Persist — persists state, not a real database, breaks fast with complex data
✅ Realm — local database that automatically syncs when connectivity returns. No retry logic. No queue management. No manual merging.
The setup:
Realm subscription scoped to the user's vessel ID (kept data footprint small)
Write transactions always on background thread (never block the UI)
MongoDB Atlas handles cloud sync and conflict resolution automatically
Result: App worked fully offline. Data synced the moment signal returned. Zero data loss.
Next time you're building a React Native app for variable connectivity — Realm is worth the setup time.
