A founder asked me to start with the onboarding. It was the thing he wanted fixed most.
I told him onboarding comes last.
Onboarding is the book cover. It's where you explain the product in a few steps and show someone why it's worth their time. You can't write a good cover for a book that isn't finished.
If the core flows are still confusing, a polished five-step intro just sets up an expectation the rest of the product immediately breaks. You teach the user to expect clarity, then drop them into a maze.
So the order matters. Get the features and the flows right first. Make the actual experience clear. Then build the onboarding on top of something that holds up.
Founders reach for onboarding because it feels like the front door. You fix what's behind it first, then you decide how to walk people in.
