Series: Letters Beyond Pilot: Episode 1 — The Letter From Her
Letters Beyond is a supernatural fantasy series set in the secluded mountain village of Asterbrook, where strange creatures live alongside ordinary people and an ancient forest surrounds the village.
The story follows Fae, an 18-year-old courier who inherited an unusual green satchel from her mother, who mysteriously disappeared when Fae was a child. The satchel is not ordinary. Letters mysteriously appear inside it, and Fae somehow always knows where they belong. She has spent years delivering them to the people waiting for them.
In the pilot, Fae delivers a letter to an elderly man from someone he lost long ago. After leaving the village, she discovers another letter inside her satchel.
This one is addressed to her. The handwriting belongs to her missing mother.
Where I would take the series next
As Fae follows the clues hidden in her mother's letters, she discovers that the people she believed were dead may not be dead at all. They are lost somewhere beyond her world.
The satchel is connected to other worlds, each with its own strange landscapes, creatures and rules. Fae begins travelling between them, searching for the people who disappeared and uncovering the truth about her mother, the satchel and why it chose her.
Eventually, Fae discovers that her mother was doing the same thing before she disappeared. She wasn't simply delivering letters. She was saving people. Some came back. Some didn't. And some may have returned changed.
Why I wanted to tell this story
I wanted to create a fantasy adventure that explores grief, loss and determination without making loss final.
The hand-drawn animated format gives the story the freedom to expand far beyond Asterbrook and explore completely different fantasy worlds, creatures and environments.
But I didn't want to reveal all of that at once. In the first episode, I wanted the world to feel almost ordinary at first. Asterbrook is a quiet mountain village where life feels familiar and grounded. The satchel is the first indication that something much stranger exists beneath the surface. As Fae's journey continues, the audience can discover the world alongside her, gradually uncovering its rules, mysteries and possibilities.
At its heart, Letters Beyond is about what we do when someone we love disappears, and how far we are willing to travel to bring them home.
