Shopify switched the Universal Commerce Protocol on by default this summer. There is nothing to configure and nothing to install. Eligible products get listed in Shopify Catalog automatically, and that catalog is what ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode read when someone asks them for a recommendation.
So product data quietly became a sales channel, and almost nobody has changed how they write it. An agent reads a product page very differently from a customer. A customer forgives a vague title because the photo tells them what the thing is. An agent has the text and the fields, and nothing else.
Three things decide whether you get picked.
Titles need the attributes a shopper would actually say out loud. "Ridge Cotton Crew, Navy, Heavyweight, Unisex" gets matched. "The Ridge Tee" does not. Internal product naming is where most stores lose this before anything else has a chance to go wrong.
Descriptions should answer what your support inbox already asks. Fit, materials, compatibility, what is in the box. Agents pull facts and skip brand copy, so if your sizing guidance only exists inside a chart image, it does not exist.
Fill the boring fields. Product type, options, variants, barcode. That is what gets standardised into the catalog, and an empty field is a product that cannot be compared against a competitor who filled theirs in.
The check takes five minutes. Open ChatGPT, describe one of your own products the way a customer would, without naming your brand, and see whether you come up. If you don't, that is the work.
