Google Isn't the Only Search Engine Anymore
Your buyers are asking AI first. Your website was built for a world where they asked Google.
That gap is quietly costing businesses more than any ranking drop ever did.
Here's the shift. Search used to be a list. You typed a query, got ten blue links, and picked one. Now people open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or an AI overview and ask a question in plain language. What they get back isn't options. It's an answer. Often one recommendation, already decided.
Which means the strategy has to change.
Websites built for Google were built to rank. Keywords, backlinks, meta tags, position tracking. All of it still works, and none of it is enough anymore.
Websites built for AI search are built to be understood and cited. That's a different job entirely.
AI needs structure. Clean markup, proper schema, content organized so a machine can extract a clear answer instead of guessing at one. It needs clarity. Vague marketing copy gets skipped, specific claims get quoted. And it needs trust signals, because AI pulls from a small pool of sources it considers credible. If you're not in that pool, you don't exist in the answer.
The businesses figuring this out right now have an enormous advantage. Most of their competitors are still optimizing for a search behavior that's already changing underneath them. This window won't stay open long. It never does.
Google isn't dead. It's just no longer the only door.
If you want to know whether AI is mentioning your business or your competitors, send me a message. Let's find out where you actually stand.

The shift from ranking in search results to being understood by AI answers is a useful framing. What is the first website change you would recommend to a business adapting to that behavior?
