WING THEORY | Nature's patterns. At your fingertips.
I never thought a scientific study of butterfly wings could become a nail collection, but here we are!
I came across Alfred G. Mayer's On the Color and Color-Patterns of Moths and Butterflies from 1897 on The Public Domain Review, and I was fascinated by the way he transformed butterfly wings into these beautiful, almost abstract patterns to study their colors and symmetry.
So I imagined WING THEORY, a fictional press-on nail brand that takes these forgotten scientific illustrations and turns them into tiny pieces of wearable art.
Using the original illustrations as references, I created a custom Recraft Style and explored how their colors, intricate patterns, and even the little scientific markings could translate into contemporary nail designs.
I wanted each set to feel like a small collection of butterfly specimens, except instead of being preserved behind glass in a museum, they're meant to be worn.
