Something I do in my spare time: I take well‑regarded books from different genres and edit them – privately, for my own practice. Sometimes it’s a book I’ve already read, looking at it now with an editor’s lens. Other times it’s a new read that I go over, imagining how I would tighten a scene or deepen a character arc.
This habit keeps me sharp on the patterns and principles that make a story work. It helps me see what great writing does – and what it could do even better.
Every time I do this, I become a better editor for my clients. Because when you’ve studied the bones of a good book, you can help someone else build their own.
