A visitor lands on your store for the first time. Before they've seen a single product, a popup covers the whole screen asking for their email in exchange for 10 percent off.
Most people close it immediately. Some leave the site entirely.
Here's the problem with that moment. This person hasn't decided anything yet. They don't know if they like what you sell, they don't know if they trust the store, and you're already asking them to commit their email address. It's like being asked to sign up for a newsletter before you've even walked through the door.
I looked at a batch of Shopify stores recently and almost every one triggered the discount popup within two or three seconds of landing on the page. Same popup for every visitor, every time, regardless of what they were doing.
Here's what tends to go wrong with popup timing:
→ Triggered immediately on page load instead of after any real browsing happened → Shown to visitors who already subscribed, asking them to sign up again → Covering the screen with no easy way to browse first and decide later → Same discount offered to everyone, including people who were seconds from buying anyway at full price
None of this means popups are bad. Timing them poorly is what turns a helpful offer into an annoying wall.
What actually works better, and takes minutes to change in your settings:
Delay the popup by a reasonable amount of time or trigger it after some scrolling, not the instant someone arrives.
Use exit intent triggers instead, showing the offer right as someone's about to leave, when it can actually save the sale.
Suppress the popup for anyone who already subscribed. Most Shopify popup apps have this setting built in already.
Test a smaller, less intrusive version, like a corner banner, against the full screen takeover and compare results honestly.
A discount only works if the person sees it at the right moment. Too early and it feels like a wall. Right before they leave, it feels like a reason to stay.
If your popup is set to trigger instantly for everyone, that's worth testing differently this week.
Has an early popup ever made you close a site before even looking around? Curious how often this actually happens to people.
