Quick reality check for business owners here: Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT don't cite the "best" website — they cite the clearest one.
When I audit a website for AI search visibility, these are the first three things I check:
1. Can AI understand what you do in one sentence?
If your homepage needs three paragraphs to explain your offer, AI skips you and cites the competitor who said it plainly.
2. Are your facts consistent everywhere?
Your services, location and business name should match across your website, Google Business Profile and directories. Conflicting facts mean no citation.
3. Do your pages answer real buyer questions?
AI cites pages that directly answer what buyers ask — prices, timelines, comparisons, how it works. Pages that only say "we are the best" give AI nothing to quote.
None of this needs a big budget. It's clarity, consistency and answers — in that order.
Happy to answer in the comments if anyone wants to sanity-check their own site against these three.
