How do you design a store when every product is black? That was the challenge behind VAEL, a brand selling 15 pieces in two editions: Onyx and Contrast.
With no colour to guide shoppers, the design had to do it. Bold condensed type sets the tone, clean outlines show what's selected, and one soft pink highlights sales and rewards.
I designed 20 screens for desktop and mobile, in light and dark mode, from the homepage all the way to checkout.
The result is a store as sharp as the product, and easy to shop. Live demo: https://claude.ai/code/artifact/4e953fd5-47c5-4429-ae8f-e6550690f47b
Over the past month, I've been spending more time exploring Shopify store design and thinking about what makes an online store work well.
One thing that stands out to me is that good e-commerce design involves much more than appearance.
I've been paying closer attention to:
→ How a homepage guides visitors
→ How product pages present important information
→ How collections help customers discover products
→ How navigation affects the shopping experience
→ How a store adapts to mobile screens
→ How consistent design builds a stronger brand experience
I'm also learning to think more carefully about the purpose behind each section instead of designing just because something looks good.
Every page should have a reason to exist, and every design decision should contribute to the overall experience.
I still have more to learn and improve, but each project gives me another opportunity to practice, experiment, and develop my approach.
My biggest takeaway so far: good Shopify design brings visual presentation, usability, and the customer's journey together.
What's one thing you believe every e-commerce designer should understand?
Clean work Farook! Skin care Shopify stores need that premium dark vibe and you nailed it. Best sellers section looks super eye-catching with that layout. Great use of Photoshop!
A little mockup exploration for today. Laptop screens bring that classic desktop feel, while tablet mockups give the design a more hands-on look. I’m leaning toward one, but curious where you stand.
