DecorAI — Building an AI That Understands Interior Spaces, Not Just Prompts 🧠🏠
Most AI interior design tools can generate beautiful images.
But there is a bigger challenge:
What happens when you already have a real room and only want to change one thing?
For example:
“Change only the sofa color.”
A simple request can easily result in the AI changing the walls, furniture, windows, lighting, proportions, or even the entire room.
That’s the problem I wanted to solve with DecorAI.
Instead of immediately generating a new image, DecorAI first tries to understand the existing space.
The approach
Understand → Analyze → Preserve → Redesign
The system combines several computer vision techniques to build a better understanding of the room:
Object Detection with YOLO11n
Semantic Segmentation with Mask2Former
Image Processing with OpenCV
Spatial Analysis to identify available space and relationships
Preservation Intelligence to determine what should remain unchanged
This allows the redesign process to become more controlled.
For example, if the user wants to change a sofa, the goal isn't simply:
❌ Generate a completely new living room
Instead:
✅ Identify the sofa ✅ Understand its position and surroundings ✅ Preserve the walls, floor, windows and other elements ✅ Modify only the requested element ✅ Maintain realistic lighting, proportions and spatial relationships
Why this matters
I believe the future of AI interior design isn't only about generating more beautiful images.
It's about generating images that are more consistent with the user's actual space and intentions.
DecorAI is an exploration of how Generative AI + Computer Vision + Spatial Understanding can work together to achieve that.
The project also includes AI prompt generation, room analysis, controlled redesign, RoomMatch for visual consistency, image editing, and a personal design gallery.
These two screenshots show part of the workflow — from analyzing the room and understanding its available space to building a more intelligent redesign process.
