"Crawl budget" sounds abstract until it's costing you rankings.
Here's the simple version: Google allocates a limited amount of time and resources to crawl your site. If that budget is wasted on duplicate pages, broken links, infinite filter URLs, or thin content, your important pages get crawled less often sometimes not at all.
Signs your crawl budget is being wasted: → Thousands of indexed pages you didn't intend to have indexed → New content taking weeks to appear in search → Search Console showing "Discovered, currently not indexed" on important pages
Fixes that matter most: → Block low-value pages via robots.txt or noindex → Fix broken internal links and redirect chains → Consolidate or canonicalize duplicate content → Keep your XML sitemap clean and current
This is one of the first things I check in every technical audit; it's invisible until you look, and it quietly caps your growth.
