Before I design a single thing, I spend a week trying to put the practice into words.
A therapist came to me after thirty-five years in practice with no website and one sentence that mattered more than anything else she said: every therapist site looks the same, and she wanted hers to feel different.
That is not a design brief. That is a strategy problem, so that is where I started.
Here is what brand identity actually means before it means colors. I write down who the practice is for, what it believes, and what makes it the only one of its kind. For Catherine, the answer was sitting in something she said in passing. Her clients graduate. They finish the work and they leave, and she talks about that as the whole point. Most therapy branding is built on the idea of an endless journey. Hers is built on the opposite, the work has an end, and you get there.
That one idea now decides everything downstream. The color is not soft because the practice is not soft. The type has structure because the work has structure. The whole identity points at resolution instead of comfort.
Strategy is the part nobody sees and the part that makes the rest of it inevitable. When you do it first, every later decision has an easy answer, because you already know who you are designing for and why.
If your brand feels like it could belong to anyone in your field, you probably skipped this step. It is worth going back for.
