OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra this week. It can open Blender, model an entire house, and turn it into a walkable 3D scene in Unreal Engine, from one prompt, without a human touching a single tool.

It also scored 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3, a benchmark built specifically to measure general intelligence. OpenAI's own president, Greg Brockman, told reporters, "Welcome to the AGI era." Asked whether this is the model where AGI actually began, he said, "It might be about this model."

Here's the part worth sitting with if you're an independent designer or developer. Independent researchers ran the same benchmark and got 62.7%, not 99.9%. Still record breaking, just not the number OpenAI is leading with. That gap between a company's internal number and an outside, reproducible one is exactly the kind of thing freelancers can't afford to skip past, because we're the ones who'll actually be handed these tools mid-project and expected to know what they can and can't do.

The 3D modeling capability is the part I'd actually pay attention to over the AGI framing. A model that can go from prompt to walkable 3D scene changes what a client can reasonably ask for on a tight turnaround, and it changes what "fast" means in a proposal. Whether or not this is AGI is a debate for OpenAI's marketing team. Whether it changes your next quote is not.
