Dukaan Didi.For some, this might just be another generic idea — another app, another hackathon build, another link to scroll past. For me, this one was personal.I grew up in Kasauli, a small hill town in Himachal, where my family has run a shop for as long as I can remember. Painted shutters. A brass scale that never needed batteries. Chalk prices that got rewritten by hand every few weeks.
Growing up next to a shop teaches you what it actually is, underneath. It isn't just a counter and a shelf. It's the guess you made on stock before the season turned. It's the slow weeks when the tourists didn't come, and the good weeks when the whole bazaar was awake before sunrise. I watched my family live inside that rhythm every year of my life.
What always stayed with me was how much was sitting right there, unused. Hotels a few minutes' walk from our shop, needing exactly what we sold, and no easy way for either side to reach the other. Nobody was talking to each other. Not because they didn't want to. There was just never a door.
That's the door I wanted to build.
Dukaan Didi is a WhatsApp-style AI who talks to a shopkeeper the way an actual didi would — nagging you gently before a festival, noticing when your stock is low, telling you when the tourists are about to arrive so you're not caught off guard. She reads the season. She tells you when a hotel nearby needs exactly what you already have on your shelf, so you don't have to make a phone call you've never had the confidence to make.
I built it the way I always build — starting from a place I actually know, not a trend. I didn't want a template with a stock photo and a generic hero line. I wanted it to look and feel like the bazaar I grew up in — whitewashed walls, blue window frames, tin roofs going rust at the edges, hand-painted signboards. I kept adding, one honest layer at a time, until it stopped feeling like a demo and started feeling like something that could actually sit in my family's shop.It's still something I'm working on, so do let me know how I can improve it — any inputs are welcome.
