I have a degree in English and also minored in editing and creative writing where I studied the nitty-gritty details of language. I've been an editor for over a year, and I've been beta reading for 3 years. I worked as an acquisitions editor for a science fiction and fantasy magazine and edited several novels. I've also written two of my own novels.
Here are the things I typically look for in a copy and line edit:
Language/voice/syntax
Grammar
Punctuation
Continuity
Fact consistency (descriptions, settings, character details, etc.)
Technical consistency (spelling, capitalization, font usage, punctuation, numerals, etc.)
Filler words
Weak verbs
Dialogue
I specialize in young adult, romance, historical fiction, science fiction, and fantasy books.
Note: In this edit, I won't be looking for larger issues such as plot holes or weak character arcs. If you'd like that kind of edit, I have a developmental editing service you can check out.
