Process
My editing process is seven steps. I will provide two rounds of revision.
The first step is the initial consultation with the client. I want to define the project scope, client goals, and the deadlines I have to meet. I also want to understand who the intended audience is, the purpose of the document, and the style preferences.
The second step is the first read-through of the document to understand the overall structure and content. In this step, I begin to highlight areas within the document that need clarity, coherence, and effectiveness.
For the third step, I move on to the editing process. I begin to correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. Then I move on to content enhancement, strengthening sentences, transitions, and flow. The last step is making sure that the voice and style are effective and in check with what the author intends for their audience. I also fact-check to verify accuracy within the document, if need be.
For the fourth step, I collaborate with the author. I provide feedback on the document, the structure, the narrative, and the impact it had on me as the reader. I might offer suggestions that could flow better in the document.
The fifth step is the final polish of the editing process. I'll look over the document a second time to make sure there is consistency and it aligns with the style guidelines. I ensure that all edits are implemented accurately and effectively. I also double-check that the revisions align with client expectations and their overall goal for the document.
The sixth step I provide the document back to the client in the agreed-upon format (for example, Microsoft Word.) I'll include any feedback I have for the author and my revisions in a separate document.
The seventh step is follow-up and support. I want to offer post-editing support or clarification on any edited parts of the document. I'll ensure that the client's needs are met and I'll answer any concerns or questions regarding the document.
