Draft studying. Moodboard/ inspiration and first concepts
After an initial conversation with the client, the first steps of the project began. They start by studying the draft and the project´s specifications (size, format, number of illustrations, etc), but also getting to know the story and the characters. Then, it's time for some research and inspiration via creating Moodboard and looking for inspiration in terms of imagery and the look/feel for the illustrations. Finally, some initial explorations/concept design are made.
Thumbnails/storyboards
After a clear understanding of the story and characters, it's time to divide the text onto the number of pages. This process involves knowing the number of pages and the number of illustrations, it also gives a first glimpse for the compositions as well. The deliverable is a storyboard, and the text divided and distributed according to the book´s format.
Sketches and Line Art
Once the storyboard is approved, more defined sketches are made for each of the illustrations. First they will be rough sketches, and once these are approved as well, Line Art/ Final sketch is developed. During this step, the color palette is also defined and polished, just before coloring the illustrations. This is a vital step in order to define composition, text placement, and more; it also helps the general process, avoiding further corrections or mistakes.
Final illustrations
Final illustrations are delivered for printing. They are also delivered with the specifications the project requires (size, margins, format, etc). It is recommended that before printing, the illustrations are deeply revised to avoid mistakes.
