Claims data can tell you a lot about where money is going — if someone actually digs into it. I work with healthcare claims data to find out what's really driving costs: which departments or patient groups account for the biggest spend, and whether the usual explanations (like patient demographics) actually hold up or not.

In one project I did, I looked at 4,500 claims worth $22.5M and found Pediatrics was the single biggest cost driver at $4.9M. I also ran statistical tests to check whether demographics alone explained cost or outcomes — they didn't, which pointed to other, more useful factors worth investigating.
