About this service

Summary

Need original material for your acting reel? As a writer, filmmaker, and actor I totalllllly get it.
This service includes crafting a 1-3 page scene in your genre of choice, with collaborative character exploration and a final workshop to refine the script to your performance needs. We’ll jump on a GoogleMeet to work through the scene together, using your instincts as a guide to create something dynamic and authentic. Optional add-ons include me as a virtual reader to give real-time feedback and/or adding a custom score from composer Rachel Elizabeth Jacobs for that cinematic flair!

Process

We’ll be focusing on one scene (1-3 pages) in your genre of choice.
Character Archetype Exploration: Through messaging, we will have a collaborative discussion to understand the core of your character.
Script Drafting: I’ll write the scene and send over a draft for your review.
Live Workshopping: We’ll hop on a GoogleMeet session to dive into the scene together, using your instincts and insights to guide what’s working, what’s not, and how we can push deeper.
Final Script Delivery: After our workshop, I’ll refine the scene and deliver the polished final draft.
This process will be a dynamic and creative exchange, all about making the scene feel authentic and tailored to your performance.
Optional Add-Ons:
Reader: I can also be your virtual reader for the final version—giving notes and real-time feedback so you’re getting an extra set of eyes on everything.
Custom Score: Bring your tape to a new level with a custom score. No need to fuss with music library subscriptions or troublesome licenses, just let the pros take care of it!
As a filmmaker, I enjoy making my demo tapes immersive and music is a great tool to do just that. Even neuroscientists believe in its power, take Daniel J. Levitin, he’s written several books on the transformative effects of music on a silly little thing called our brain (I Heard There Was a Secret Chord and This Is Your Brain on Music). So yes, filmmakers and nerds alike agree that music is, like, totally cool.
With that being said, I want to introduce you to the composer of Melvin, a web series I wrote and co-directed back in 2020, and the star of this add-on: Rachel Elizabeth Jacobs:
Composer Rachel Elizabeth Jacobs brings a fresh twist to classical and contemporary scores.  The daughter of a classical pianist and a 70s rock music enthusiast, she grew up with an eclectic love of music, so you can just as easily find her writing an opera, a Neo-romantic soundscape, or an Emerson, Lake, and Palmer-inspired score.
She recently scored the feature film “Sirona,” directed by Wesley Clark, and wrote additional music for “No Ordinary Love,” directed by Chyna Butler, both of which are streaming on Amazon Prime.  She scored the mini-series “Melvin,” created by Ethel England and Joel Bringolf, and the short film “Cooking with Claudia,” directed by Priscila Torres, which is currently making the film festival circuit.  She received a Master of Music in Composition at the University of Texas and graduated magna cum laude with honors distinction from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Music in Composition and a Certificate in Music Business.

FAQs

  • Do I get to use the scene however I like?

When it comes to acting, whether that's posting the scene on your socials, casting portfolios, IMDb, personal site, etc. yeah! You can film this self tape style (an optional add-on is booking me for your reader:) ) or collaborate with friends to create an immersive scene, or, IDK go big and hire a studio to film your custom scene! What you can't do is use it outside your personal acting. For instance, you can't submit the scenes to film festivals, develop the scene into a larger script/project, pretend you wrote it, etc.. If you ever find yourself interested in developing your custom scene into something bigger please contact me! I'd love to see where that takes us:)

  • Do I have to tell people you wrote it?

You are not required to credit me as the writer when using the scene. However, if asked by a third party (e.g., in interviews, on social media, or in professional conversations) about the scene’s authorship, you MUST identify me as the author. TLDR: When asked, tell the truth, bud.

  • How long does it take?

From start to finish it can take a week to deliver the final script! But life is crazy sometimes, so if you can't reply ASAP, or hop on a GoogleMeet within the week then the process can take longer.

  • Can you write for an existing character/franchise?

No. And I wouldn't want to. Here's why: Whether it's a Marvel character or an A24 film, the laws that govern art make it so that it is illegal to profit off of someone else's IP without their consent. This is why fanfics are free, but once a fanfic becomes popular and a book deal ensues suddenly all material relating to the copyright IP *poof* vanishes! This is because it would be like super illegal and rude to use someone else's original idea to turn a profit, unless you have consent, like licensing.

What's included

  • Polished Scene Pitch

This is a polished starting point for the scene. After our initial discussion over messaging I will craft a 1-3 page scene which we will then fine tune in our GoogleMeet.

  • Final Draft

After our live workshopping on GoogleMeet I will revise the scene and email a final draft. This is yours, and yours only.

  • Optional Add-On: Elevate your scene with a custom score

As a filmmaker, I can't resist offering this optional add-on: a custom score by composer Rachel Elizabeth Jacobs is honestly NEXT level.

  • Optional Add-On: Reader

Need a reader? I can be there (virtually) as you tape your scene, doing impromptu rewrites if necessary and generally helping you out, actor-to-actor.

Working with Ethel was a joy. From beginning to end Ethel was professional, courteous, and on time. She explains her process at the start which gives you a concise plan on how she will be helping you create an EPK. What I loved most about her approach was how the choices were not overwhelming. She guided me gently and presented a sample of choices at every level from font to color tones. I will be seeking her out again in the future.
