Process

I start by previewing the material that is available to me and analyzing methodically what the strongpoints of the story are and what the sound should emphasize on. I create a comprehensive list of ambiences and sound effects that should be created or sourced, and sketch concepts and techniques needed in order to create them. I put them against the narrative and evaluate what the overall sensibility I am going for. 
I like to start with the ambiences, and move to assembling specific sound sources in the scene. I record and synthesize as well as multilayer effects in order to create them. Having access to a big library of sounds as well as great recording equipment makes it easier to assemble just what I am aiming for. When I have completed the ambience, I move to groups of sound effects, as I can focus my undivided attention to a single goal, instead of working on several types of SFX at ones. During this period, I constantly revise the sounds and see how they fit in the sensibility I have mapped out for the narrative. I do a lot of tweaking in this phase until I reach the result I am satisfied with. 
After completing most of the sounds for a particular scene, I assemble it and brush out the imperfections in the mix, find the room for improvement and work to close the recess. And then start all over again.
