Process

Step-by-Step Process for Creating 3D Characters for Games, Films, and Renders
1. Client Consultation & Concept Development
Discuss the character's design, style, and project requirements (games, films, renders) with the client. Gather references and agree on the character's visual and functional specifications.
2. High-Poly Sculpting (ZBrush)
Start by sculpting a highly detailed version of the character in ZBrush, focusing on form, proportions, and intricate details. Share progress updates with the client for early feedback.
3. Low-Poly Modeling & Retopology (Maya)
Transfer the high-poly model to Maya and create a low-poly version suitable for animation and game engines. This step ensures optimal performance while maintaining the character’s quality.
4. UV Mapping (Maya)
Unwrap the character’s UVs in Maya, preparing it for texturing. Proper UV mapping ensures textures are applied accurately and efficiently across the character’s surface.
5. Texturing (Substance Painter)
Import the UV-mapped model into Substance Painter and begin the texturing process. Apply detailed textures, including color maps, normal maps, roughness maps, and more. Share textured previews with the client for approval.
6. Rigging (Optional - Maya or Unreal Engine)
If the character requires animation, rig the model with a skeleton in Maya or Unreal Engine, based on client preferences, to prepare it for movement.
7. Lighting & Rendering (Maya or Unreal Engine)
Set up lighting and environments in either Maya or Unreal Engine to render high-quality images or animations. Choose the rendering software based on the client's preferred platform.
8. Client Feedback & Revisions
Send the rendered character for client review. Make any necessary adjustments or revisions based on the client's feedback to ensure the character meets all specifications.
9. Final Delivery
Deliver the final character model in formats like FBX, OBJ, or Unreal Engine packages, along with any textures, rigs, and rendered images or animations. Source files can also be included upon request.

FAQs

  • What is the difference between a VRChat (VRC) character and a MetaHuman character?

A VRChat (VRC) character is typically optimized for use in virtual reality (VR) on platforms such as VRChat, supporting VRM or VRC formats and allowing users to interact in VR environments in real time. A MetaHuman character, on the other hand, is created with photorealistic details specifically for Unreal

  • What do you mean by "full body and face rigging"?

Full-body rigging includes setting up bones and controls that enable realistic movement of the character’s limbs, body, and head. Facial rigging adds controls for facial expressions like smiling, frowning, blinking, and other nuanced movements, essential for detailed animation and VR expressions.

  • Do you provide animation with the character model?

Basic facial expressions and gestures are included in all packages. However, if you require specific animations, such as walk cycles, dances or custom sequences for the film, we offer these as an additional service. Simply tell us what you are looking for and we can provide you with a custom quote.

  • Can you match a specific art style or use my reference images?

Absolutely! We encourage clients to share references, concept art, or photos to achieve the desired look. We can work with a range of styles, from realistic and cinematic to stylized or even cartoonish, depending on your vision.

  • In what format will the files be delivered?

By default, we deliver models in FBX, OBJ or GLB formats, which are compatible with most VR and 3D software. For Metahuman projects, we can provide Unreal Engine ready files. Let us know if you need a specific format and we will do our best to accommodate you.

  • What industries or projects do you create 3D characters for?

I create 3D characters for a variety of industries including video games, film production, and standalone renders for marketing or promotional materials.

  • What tools do you use to create the 3D characters?

I primarily use ZBrush for high-poly sculpting, Maya for low-poly modeling and UV mapping, Substance Painter for texturing, and either Maya or Unreal Engine for rendering, depending on client preferences.

  • Can I request changes during the creation process?

Yes, I provide regular updates at different stages (high-poly sculpting, texturing, rendering), and I offer 2-3 rounds of revisions based on your feedback to ensure the character meets your expectations.

  • Can you handle custom clothing, accessories or props for my character?

Yes, we can create custom outfits, accessories and props to suit your character's style. These are included in the Premium package and can also be added to other packages as an add-on.
