A Moro kris, and
ITEM 1153 A Moro kris, and the forge that made it The Met can tell you this sword weighs 972 grams. It can't tell you who forged it. So I put the forge back in the blade. The piece Kris (kalis) — Philippine, Jolo, Sulu. 18th–19th century. Steel and silver, 76.8 cm, 972 g. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Bequest of George C. Stone, 1935. Accession 36.25.1153. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/27842 A Moro fighting sword from Jolo, in the Sulu archipelago — the part of the Philippines Spain never fully subjugated across three centuries of colonisation. The Met's record gives its weight to a tenth of an ounce and files it under the classification "Krisses." It does not say who forged it, who carried it, or what it did. What I made George Cameron Stone, who left it to the museum, was a mining engineer and a metallurgist. He wrote a glossary of the world's arms and kept over five thousand weapons in a house on West 11th Street. This one entered New York as item 1153. He could have measured the carbon in that edge to a decimal place. He could not have read it. The sword sits on its stand exactly as a museum would light it — and inside the polished steel, a smith is still working. Three strikes, sparks across the metal, then the fire goes out and it's an object in a case again. How it was built FLORA's free tier doesn't include video generation. So I animated it the way animation was done before video existed: still frames, each one a different moment of the fire, every one masked to the blade and composited onto a single locked plate so the sword itself could never move. Then interpolated into motion, with the camera pushing in across the whole shot and the firelight on the table keyed to each hammer blow. The canvas shows all of it — including the failures. The version where the reflection replaced the steel instead of sitting on it. The pass that changed nothing. The prompt that turned the blade into a cleaver. They're still there, labelled, because that's what the process actually looked like. Canvas: https://app.flora.ai/join-project/1a3c741b-d0b5-4f03-bb1d-bde718935953
