Copyediting vs Line Editing Comparison These four images demonstrate the difference between copyediting and line editing by presenting two separate edits of the same excerpt in a before-and-after format. The accompanying comments provide insight into the editorial decisions behind the changes made. *Copyediting Interventions* - Corrected grammatical errors and verb forms - Corrected nonstandard word usage - Removed clear instances of redundant wording - Queried possible redundancy where authorial intent was uncertain - Corrected punctuation errors - Queried inconsistent dialect usage (US vs UK English) - Suggested optional paragraph restructuring to improve pacing while preserving authorial intent *Line Editing Interventions* - Incorporated the same core corrections made during copyediting while taking more direct editorial action to improve style, flow, and narrative effectiveness - Tightened repetitive phrasing for concision - Streamlined figurative language while preserving tone - Revised internal monologue for greater immediacy and emotional impact - Reduced narrative distance by presenting internal thoughts more directly - Adjusted paragraphing to strengthen pacing and emphasis - Reworked sentence structure to improve flow and readability - Smoothed transitions between ideas to improve narrative flow - Preserved narrative voice while enhancing clarity and rhythm
