"Should I use WordPress or Shopify?" I get asked this every week. Here's my honest answer, because there isn't one right choice. Use Shopify if: → You're primarily selling products online. → You want built-in payment processing, inventory, and shipping without setting anything up. → You'd rather pay a monthly fee (from $29/month) than manage hosting, updates, and security yourself. → Your team is non-technical, Shopify's backend is genuinely easy to use. → You plan to scale to high order volumes, Shopify handles this without breaking. Use WordPress if: → Your site is primarily content, services, or information, not a product catalogue. → You want maximum flexibility and ownership, WordPress is open source, you own everything. → You need complex custom functionality that Shopify's ecosystem doesn't cover. → You want full control over your SEO, WordPress with the right setup is more SEO-flexible. → Budget is a priority, WordPress itself is free, you only pay for hosting and premium plugins. The honest truth most developers won't tell you: Shopify is harder to mess up. WordPress gives you more power and more ways to break things. For a business owner who wants to sell products and not think about technology, Shopify. For a business owner who wants a content-rich, custom, fully-owned web presence, WordPress. For most businesses I work with, I'd ask three questions before recommending either: What's your primary goal? What's your technical comfort level? What's your monthly budget? The answers decide the platform. Not trends. Which one are you currently using, and are you happy with it?
