🧠 INSIDE THE PRODUCT #01
Why does Duolingo feel so addictive?
Most people think it's because of gamification.
Points. Badges. Leaderboards.
But the real retention engine is much deeper:
Loss Aversion.
Duolingo understood that people hate losing something they've already earned more than they enjoy gaining something new.
That's why the streak is so powerful.
The longer it grows, the more emotionally valuable it becomes.
At some point, users stop opening the app to learn a language.
They open it because they don't want to lose their streak.
This is one of the smartest examples of behavioral psychology applied to product design.
What successful app should I break down next?
