Been auditing a lot of Webflow sites lately.
These are the 5 performance issues I keep seeing with the fix for each one.
01 — Unoptimized images
A 4MB hero kills your load time before the page renders.
Fix: Export at max 200KB, use WebP, enable lazy load.
02 — Interactions firing on page load
If every element animates on load, the browser does 10 things at once.
Fix: Delay non-critical animations 300–500ms. Trigger above-the-fold first.
03 — Unused styles and interactions
Every unused class Webflow keeps in the build adds dead weight.
Fix: Clean your style panel before publishing. If it's not live, delete it.
04 — Render-blocking custom code
Scripts in the <head> block everything below from loading.
Fix: Move to closing <body> or add defer to your embeds.
05 — CMS queries loading too much
If your collection pulls 50+ items on load, the page waits for all of them.
Fix: Limit items to what's visible. Paginate the rest.

Recently I’ve started prototyping my designs in Figma more than I have in the past.
I tended to avoid prototyping in the past due to it being time consuming and honestly most of the projects I was working on were simple enough to not require this amount of detail.
But as the projects I work on have become more complex I’ve found that this extra attention to detail really helps align with stakeholders and sell them on a design before starting development.
With a prototyped design clients are able to interact and see how the website will function, not just how it will look. This helps reduce uncertainty in the final deliverable and ultimately helps speed up Webflow development.
In the past describing all the hover interactions and click interactions for something even as simple as the slider below would require both time for me to explain and some imagination on the client’s part.
While imagination is great, it’s not the best way to align on fine details.
Anyways, long story short, new policy is show don’t tell.

In the middle of a project where I’m turning a cluttered website into something more clean and conversion-focused. It’s coming together nicely.
