One Keyword Can Have Traffic — But Zero Buying Intent.
One thing I’ve learned while working with Google Ads:
High search volume doesn't automatically mean a good keyword.
For example, imagine a company selling HR software.
Someone searching:
“What is HR software?”
may simply be researching.
But someone searching:
“HR payroll software for small business”
is much closer to making a decision.
Both searches are relevant to HR software.
But their intent is completely different.
That's why keyword research shouldn't stop at search volume.
Before targeting a keyword, I look at:
Search Intent → Relevance → Commercial Value → Competition → Expected Conversion Potential
And after launching?
The Search Terms Report becomes even more important.
It shows what people actually searched before clicking the ad.
That's where I can:
• Find new high-intent opportunities • Add irrelevant searches as negative keywords • Improve campaign structure • Refine ad messaging • Reduce wasted spend
Google Ads isn't simply about appearing when someone searches.
It's about appearing for the right search, at the right stage of the customer's decision journey.
