I was inspired by how much our traditional rulers relied on the Opon Ifa and how many of us in Nigeria today don't fully know what it was used for.
This carved wooden tray is used in Ifa divination:
a babalawo (Ifa priest) casts palm nuts and reads the patterns they form in powder scattered across the tray's surface, seeking guidance from Orunmila, the orisha of wisdom.
I reimagined it in a 1990s Nigerian home an ordinary afternoon, natural light through the window, the priest sitting on a mat with the tray in his hands because that's closer to how many of us actually encountered these traditions growing up:
quiet, domestic, and everyday, not something locked away in a museum case.

The close-up studies and tactile presentation make the tray feel both historically grounded and newly alive. I especially like how the material texture carries the story without over-explaining it.
