I’ve kind of got stuck in Fern’s world, and honestly, I’m enjoying it so much.
Fernwild started with an elf, a bow, a limited supply of arrows, and a forest full of things trying to kill her. Development has now reached 1.10.4, with two more stages, two new bosses, and a six-panel comic taking Fern out of the Hollow and onto the road home.
Unfortunately for her, home is on fire.
The image is from the moment she recognises her village. Building the places around that moment has been one of my favourite parts of this update.
The new chapter follows the Cinder Road into Fern’s Rest: timber houses, a market square, a well, a forge, and a shrine at the end of the street. Smoke rises between the roofs and embers drift through the rooms.
I’ve spent a surprising amount of time on things like putting barrels beside a cart, keeping a bucket with its woodpile, and making the street look walked on.
The village changes with the run’s seed, but those little scenes stay together. I want it to feel like somewhere people lived, even when you get a different layout.
There’s been plenty of less dramatic work too. Skeleton shields now break according to arrow damage, so upgrading your bow actually helps against them. The bow has six tiers, and I’ve rebalanced the start of Act II and The Long Hunt.
Some days I get to build a new boss. Other days I’m making sure a skeleton keeps his shield for the entire walking animation.
I’m enjoying both more than I expected.
Built in Godot, still growing, and increasingly hard to leave alone.
