If your marketing agency is telling you “SEO is dead” in 2026, the reality is usually less dramatic and a lot more nuanced.
Search did not disappear. It evolved.
Some agencies are rebranding what they already do.
SEO becomes GEO, AIO, or “LLM Optimization.”
To be fair, there are new surfaces like AI overviews and chat citations. But the foundation has not changed as much as the acronyms suggest.
Visibility in AI tools still relies on the same core signals that drove search for years:
• Topical authority
• High-intent content
• Structured, crawlable pages
• Quality backlinks
• Clear expertise signals
AI systems need sources. Those sources typically come from credible websites that already perform well in search.
What has changed is how content gets discovered and consumed.
Google still drives enormous intent-based traffic, especially for commercial queries. But clicks are fragmenting.
Some users get answers directly inside AI overviews.
Some search inside ChatGPT or Perplexity.
Others start on Reddit, TikTok, or YouTube.
So ranking alone is no longer...
They now appear across Google results, AI summaries, and answer engines, all from the same authoritative content base.
Search traffic grew steadily.
AI referral traffic is smaller but rising.
