If AI saves you 10 hours of coding, do you actually work 10 hours less?
Probably not.
AI is definitely helping developers write code faster. Boilerplate takes less time, debugging support is better, and first drafts of features can be produced much quicker than before.
But here’s the interesting part:
The saved time doesn’t always disappear. It usually moves somewhere else.
Recent developer research suggests that a lot of the time saved through AI is being reinvested into things like code review, debugging, learning, testing, and improving the final solution.
So maybe AI isn’t really removing work.
It’s redistributing it.
Instead of spending hours writing everything from scratch, developers are spending more time checking whether the generated code is correct, understanding edge cases, improving architecture, and making better technical decisions.
And honestly, that may be a good thing.
Because faster code generation is useful.
But better software still depends on judgment.
AI may save us time on writing code, but the real value comes from where we choose to spend that saved time.
What has AI actually reduced for you, coding time, debugging time, or nothing at all?
