Someone asked me, “What actually convinces a client through your portfolio?”
It’s not just traction, and it’s not just how visually impressive it looks.
It’s the proof of the value you can provide.
A strong portfolio gives context around the scale of problems you’ve been trusted to solve. That could be through products processing billions in transaction volume, systems used by thousands or millions of users, or tools adopted by the wider design and developer community.
For me, I’ve worked as a Design Engineer on blockchain financial products, transforming Figma designs into production-ready interfaces for a startup that later raised $2M.
I’ve also designed and engineered university platforms used by 25,000+ students and staff, turning manual academic processes into streamlined digital workflows.
I’ve contributed to an icon library with 75,000+ downloads, helping build tools used by designers and developers across different platforms.
These signals matter because the work goes beyond a portfolio. It has been shipped, used, and has solved real problems.
But you don’t need big numbers to have a convincing portfolio.
Show relevant work. Explain the problem, your contribution, your thinking, and the outcome.
If you don’t have enough real projects yet, collaborate. A motion designer can bring a UI designer’s work to life. A brand designer can build the identity. A developer can turn the concept into a working product.
You don’t need another futuristic concept to prove you can design.
Know your advantage. Everyone has something they naturally bring to the work, so lean into it.
Mine are immersive interaction, design systems, information architecture, and design engineering, and you’ll feel them throughout my work.
Yours might be illustration, typography, motion, research, or systems thinking. Make them visible through the work.
Put your strongest work first. Show results when you can. Make it easy for someone to understand what you bring to the table and what you could do for them next.
