Why I stopped using WordPress heading into 2026
My move away from WordPress started over a year ago.
Part of it was philosophical — I struggled with some of the decisions and community direction under Matt Mullenweg — but more importantly, I could see a clear shift in technology and user behaviour.
I come from a PHP background. Twenty years ago, PHP powered huge parts of the web, and WordPress was genuinely revolutionary. It was arguably the first “low-code” CMS from a client’s point of view and the first to create a global plugin ecosystem. Clients loved the control.

Imagine being so deep in build mode that it almost feels like cheating.
Not gonna lie, that’s been me since the start of the Makeathon. Going all out to create an entry I can genuinely be proud of.
It made me truly understand what “Rome wasn’t built in a day” actually means. The web wasn’t either. It’s years of evolution. Every interaction, every icon, every tiny functionality lives in our muscle memory more than we realize. Re-imagining something so ingrained was not easy. But that’s exactly why I took the challenge. And it feels worth it.
