CAPCUT 1895 — THE CINÉMATOGRAPH ATELIER
What if CapCut had existed at the birth of cinema?
That question became the foundation of this project.
Rather than redesigning a modern brand, I chose to reimagine CapCut as a Victorian motion picture company operating between 1895 and 1900, during the earliest years of cinematography. Inspired by the craftsmanship of scientific instrument makers, early camera manufacturers, patent drawings, and World's Fair exhibitions, I developed an alternative history in which CapCut emerged as a pioneer of motion picture technology.
The project evolved into a complete fictional company known as the CapCut Cinématograph Atelier—a luxury manufacturer of motion picture cameras, editing apparatus, projection systems, optical instruments, film stocks, and supporting equipment for the emerging art of cinema.
Every aspect of the world was designed from the ground up, including:
• Brand identity and visual guidelines • Engineering blueprints and patent sheets • Product advertisements and specification boards • Packaging systems and catalogues • Company headquarters and workshops • Editorial publications and promotional materials • Supporting product ecosystems and accessories
A consistent material language of polished brass, mahogany wood, aged parchment, black enamel, and wax-seal detailing was used throughout the project to reflect Victorian craftsmanship and industrial innovation.
