"The Book of Ingenious Devices, Continued: Eight Machines Al-Jazari Never Saw"
In 1206, in Diyarbakir, Ismail al-Jazari finished the Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices, a catalogue of automata, water clocks and programmable machines that earned him the title Father of Robotics. This series adds eight new plates to his book. A smartwatch, a drone, a washing machine and five more machines that run modern life are drawn exactly as his copyists drew his own inventions: flat on parchment, cut open to show their gears, and attended by the operators his pages never leave out. Because eight centuries later, automatic still is not automatic. Somewhere inside every smart machine, someone is still turning the crank. The Style was built in Recraft from folios of three surviving manuscript copies of his book, dated between 1206 and 1315.
