I've reviewed a LOT of resumes, and the same mistakes keep showing up. Here's what I see over and over:
1. Listing duties instead of results
"Responsible for managing social media accounts" tells me what your job was. It doesn't tell me if you were good at it. Compare that to: "Grew Instagram engagement by 40% in 3 months through a revamped content strategy." One is a job description. The other is proof you can deliver. Recruiters skim, give them numbers to land on.
2. Using one resume for every application
I get it, tailoring every resume feels exhausting. But a generic resume reads as generic effort. You don't need to rewrite the whole thing, just adjust your top bullet points and keywords to match what the job posting is actually asking for. Applicant tracking systems (and human recruiters) notice the difference.
3. Burying the good stuff
Recruiters spend an average of 6-7 seconds on a first resume scan. If your strongest achievement is in paragraph three, it might as well not exist. Lead with your best work. Front-load the wins.
4. Making it about you, not the employer
"I am seeking a role where I can grow and learn" nobody's hiring you to help you grow. Flip the lens: what problem can you solve for them? Frame your experience around the value you bring, not what you're hoping to get out of it.
5. Ignoring formatting and readability
Dense paragraphs, tiny fonts, inconsistent spacing, five different fonts, it all signals carelessness before anyone even reads a word. Clean, scannable, consistent. That's it. Your resume isn't a novel; it's a highlight reel.

Burying the good stuff
You have 6 seconds, SIX before a recruiter decides whether to keep reading. If your best achievement is hiding in bullet point 4 of your third job, it's basically invisible. Lead with impact.
Ignoring ATS (and then blaming "the algorithm")
Fancy fonts, tables, graphics, headers/footers with contact info, a lot of that gets mangled or straight-up ignored by applicant tracking systems. Keep it clean. Simple formatting isn't "boring," it's smart.
No numbers, anywhere
"Improved customer satisfaction" vs. "Improved customer satisfaction scores by 22% over 6 months." One of these sounds like a guess. The other sounds like proof. Numbers = credibility.
A summary that says nothing
"Hardworking professional seeking opportunities to grow" this could describe literally anyone on the planet. Your summary is prime real estate. Use it to say who you are and what you bring, specifically.
Skipping the proofread
I know, I know. But typos and inconsistent formatting quietly tell a hiring manager "this person doesn't sweat the details." Even if that's not true about you, that's the impression it leaves.

Here's the fix:
"Grew Instagram engagement by 42% in 4 months by shifting to a content calendar and testing reels weekly."
See the difference? One is a task. The other is a result. And recruiters even the tired, coffee-deprived, 200-resumes-in-one-afternoon kind respond to results.
Here's the thing nobody tells you: your resume isn't a diary of your responsibilities. It's a highlight reel of your value.
A few more mistakes I see constantly:
📌 Trying to fit everything in. Not every job, every skill, every course belongs on there. If it's not relevant to the role you want, cut it. A resume isn't your life story it's a pitch.
📌 No numbers, anywhere. Even if you weren't in a "numbers job," you can quantify something. Time saved. People trained. Errors reduced. Projects completed. Find it.
📌 Copy-pasting the same resume for every application. I get it, job hunting is exhausting. But sending the same resume for 30 different roles is like wearing the same outfit to a wedding, a job interview, and the gym. Tailor it. Even small tweaks matter.
📌 Underselling soft skills with buzzwords. "Team player." "Hard worker." "Detail-oriented." These words are everywhere and they say nothing. Show it instead. Don't tell me you're a team player , tell me you coordinated a cross-functional project across 3 departments and delivered it two weeks early.
Here's the honest truth: most people aren't bad at their jobs. They're just bad at talking about their jobs on paper. And that's a completely different skill.
Good news? It's learnable. And it's literally what I do for a living.
