The Real Reason People Aren't Buying Your Product-
After spending years and thousands of dollars building their product, Dropbox’s founders didn’t want to spend even more money on advertising.
They had a problem: people didn’t understand why they needed Dropbox. And when people don’t understand the value of your product, simply putting it in front of more people doesn't solve the problem.
So they changed their approach. Instead of asking, “How do we get this product in front of more people?” they started asking, “How do we make people want this?”
That change made all the difference.
Dropbox had a good product, but explaining “cloud-based file synchronization” wasn't exactly an exciting sales pitch. So they stopped explaining the technology and showed the experience.
They created a simple video demonstrating how Dropbox worked. You could see a file being placed into a folder and then appearing on another computer. Suddenly, you didn't need to understand the technology. You could see the value.
Dropbox shared the video with an early-adopter audience on Digg, and its waitlist reportedly jumped from around 5,000 people to roughly 75,000. They weren't simply getting more eyeballs. They were creating desire.
Then Dropbox introduced another smart growth mechanism: referrals. Existing users could invite other people and receive additional storage. The reward wasn't random. It was something Dropbox users actually wanted.
The product started helping with its own growth:
User → Value → Referral → New User → Value → Referral
That's very different from paying for another advertisement every time you need another customer.
Here's the marketing lesson- A lot of businesses think marketing means more ads, more content, more impressions and more clicks. But attention doesn't automatically create demand.
Before asking, “How can we reach more people?” ask a more important question:
“Why would the right people want this in the first place?”
Maybe you need to make the problem clearer. Maybe you need to demonstrate a better outcome. Maybe you need to educate the market or create content that makes someone think, “This is exactly the problem I'm dealing with.”
And this strategy has a name:
Demand Generation: It is about creating awareness, interest and desire around a problem and the solution you provide. It's not simply about collecting leads. It's about getting people to care before you ask them to buy.
That's why demand generation is one of the key components of marketing. Sometimes the answer isn't: “We need more advertising.” Sometimes the answer is:
“We need to give people a reason to want us.”
That's the kind of thinking I bring to customer acquisition, growth marketing and go-to-market strategy. I look beyond individual channels and focus on connecting positioning, demand generation, acquisition and conversion into one growth system.
