I explored Walter Crane's 1875 Little Red Riding Hood illustrations, preserved in a public-domain edition digitized by the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives.
Inspired by their beautiful vintage colors, intricate linework, and classic storybook aesthetic, I reimagined the fairy tale as eight connected scenes set in 2026.
I created eight modern illustrations in Recraft Studio using individual historical artworks as Style from Reference inputs. I also created a shareable Custom Recraft V4 Style using eight original 1875 illustrations by Walter Crane.😊
Using Recraft Studio and historical illustrations as style references, I introduced smartphones, modern streetwear, smart homes, and city life while preserving the charm of the original artwork.
Each Before & After comparison brings a familiar nineteenth-century fairy tale scene into the modern world.

The Natural History of Digital Habits
I found a hand-coloured illustration from Edward Donovan’s The Natural History of British Insects, Volume VIII (1799), in the Internet Archive Book Images collection on Flickr. I used this archival reference to create my custom Recraft style, Digital Natural History — 1799. My six-image series imagines small creatures using smartphones, wireless earbuds, food delivery, video calls, electric scooters, and robot vacuums. Where it helped: quick edits that kept the composition intact, making it easy to explore a different mood.
