Chaekgeori 2026 — The Shelves of Today
Chaekgeori were 19th-century Korean folding screens that painted a scholar's bookshelf as a portrait: no face, only books, brushes, porcelain and the objects that defined a person. I found these screens in the open-access collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art (CC0) and The Met (Public Domain), and trained a Recraft V4 Style on their flat reverse perspective, mineral pigments and indigo silk.
Then I asked the Style to paint the shelves of 2026: a streamer, a developer, a DJ, a student, a gamer, a podcaster, a designer and a remote worker. Each one is still a portrait without a person. The ring light sits next to the peony vase, the rubber duck next to the ink stone, the sleeping cat next to the clock. The genre was always about the objects that define us; it just needed new objects.
The project shows the full 8-panel screen, plus each shelf as its own folding screen.
Also on comments specific shelfs for - Streamers - Developers - DJ - Student - Gamer - Podcaster - Designer - Remote worker 📜 Archive references:

The full series, one shelf at a time 👇 Each panel is a portrait without a person. 01 — The Streamer. A ring light where the moon used to hang, a boom mic beside the peony vase. Live, but still a still life.

02 — The Developer. Two screens of code, a tangle of cables and a rubber duck guarding the ink stone. Debugging, 19th-century style.

03 — The DJ. The scholar's pomegranate now sits between two speakers, and the vinyl spins where the scrolls once rested.

04 — The Student. Textbooks stacked like classics, a calculator, earbuds and a desk lamp. Some shelves never change, only the exams do.

05 — The Gamer. Controllers instead of brush rests, a VR headset, and a tiny dragon figurine keeping watch over the persimmons.

06 — The Podcaster. Two microphones facing each other, an hourglass for the run time, and tea for the long episodes.

07 — The Designer. Color swatches fanned out like rare silks, brushes old and new in the same holder. Same craft, new tools.

08 — The Remote Worker. Laptop, coffee, slippers on the bottom shelf, and a cat asleep on the books. The office, painted as a scholar's study. Want to paint your own shelf? Try the Chaekgeori 2026 Style here: https://www.recraft.ai/styles/16bdb41a-58f0-4079-b0c5-c647f889b6d1 #recraftstyleschallenge

A bookshelf as a portrait is such a good idea, and it translates to today really naturally. Nice find.
