Most 404 pages are an afterthought. Nobody designs for the page they hope no one ever sees. It is usually just a default template with "Page Not Found" and a link back home. Nobody remembers it, because there is nothing to remember. When I built Varelo's new site, I did not want to skip it. A 404 page is still part of the experience, even if almost no one lands on it. So instead of treating it as an error message, I treated it as a small chance to show what we actually do: take a page nobody thinks twice about and make it something people would actually enjoy landing on. If you end up there by accident, I hope it is the first 404 page you have ever wanted to screenshot instead of just clicking away from. Small detail. But that is kind of the point.
