Your website needs to win over three parts of your visitor’s brain before they’ll buy.
Here’s what that means in practice..
When someone lands on your website, their primal brain looks for familiarity.
Am I in the right place? Is this what I expected? Can I quickly find what I need?
If the design is too radically different from what people are used to, they bounce. It feels confusing and requires too much effort to understand.
The primal brain is looking for safety and familiarity. Give it both.
But familiarity alone is forgettable.
Next, you need to speak to the emotional brain.
Within that familiar structure, break a pattern.
Use a powerful image, an unexpected phrase or an interesting composition to create excitement.
Play with expectations, but don’t go overboard.
Surprise should capture attention, not create confusion.
Finally, you need to convince the logical brain that what the visitor sees and feels is the right choice.
This is where testimonials, case studies, evidence and data come in.
We often use logic to rationalize decisions shaped by emotion and instinct. Your website needs to give people the reasons they need to feel confident in their decision.
And the order matters:
The design feels familiar and safe. I can quickly find what I’m looking for.
The copy and design create excitement. They stir emotion and make me want to learn more.
The evidence confirms that what I’m feeling is the right choice.
Familiarity without excitement is forgettable.
Excitement without familiarity is confusing.
Familiarity and excitement without proof are difficult to trust.
Great website design makes people feel safe enough to stay, excited enough to care and confident enough to buy.
Miss any one of these and you will lose sales.
