3 Things I Wish I Knew as a Young Designer
I made all of these mistakes so you don't have to.
When I started as a designer, I thought the work spoke for itself.
Just make beautiful things, and clients will come.
I was wrong.
Here are 3 things I wish someone had told me earlier:
1. Show your process
Your process shows how you think. Clients hire thinkers.
Document your process. Show your reasoning. That's what separates you.
2. Communication is your first design.
How you show up on calls, how you ask questions, how you explain your decisions, that's design too.
I once had a client tell me, "I love your work process," before I had even shown her a single concept.
Your communication builds trust before your work does.
3. Invest in your skill like it's a business.
I took a one-on-one brand identity class with a mentor early in my career. It changed everything the way I think about brands, the way I charge, the way I show up for clients. The investment in yourself always pays back.
You're not just a designer.
You're a creative business.
Start acting like one.
As a creative, is there something you wish you had known or done at the early stage of your career?
