I got my first design job without a portfolio.
A few months ago, I applied to a web design role at an agency in SF.
They asked for my portfolio and a 24-hour design challenge.
I didn't have any work to show, so the challenge had to do the talking.
The task: turn a brand brief and PRD into a landing page.
I only finished the hero section and dashboard preview, but they liked it enough to call me the next day.
This is the design that got me in the door.

A lot of freelance projects don’t become stressful because of the actual work.
It’s usually the small things around the work.
Files scattered everywhere.
Clients replying from different places.
Trying to remember what was approved.
Sending the same updates again and again.
Digging through chats to find one message from 2 weeks ago.
After working on freelance projects for years, I realized that independents spend a surprising amount of time just managing the process around projects.
That’s honestly one of the biggest reasons we started Mably.
Not because the world needs another huge “all-in-one” platform.
But because we wanted something that feels calmer and simpler for client work.
A space where:
- clients can clearly see what’s happening
- updates don’t get lost
- files and feedback stay organized
- projects feel more professional without extra effort
A lot of tools are powerful.
But many of them also feel heavy for smaller independent workflows.
We wanted Mably to feel lightweight, focused, and genuinely pleasant to use day-to-day.
Still early. Still improving every week.
But seeing independents already use it with real client projects has been really exciting honestly.
