A Lesson in Love
A Personal Essay
By: Chase Walker
I have loved many in my life but non as ferociously as her. The version of me that won her heart was confident and cocky. I had no doubt in my abilities to swoon women but had no idea how to love. It's not that I didn't love, it's that my kind of love was intense, fast, loud, and real in its own way, but not the kind of love that could hold weight over time. It was a love unable to become something more considered. Something more responsible.
I can say, however, that I love her more now than that first version of me could love anything. The man who won her heart was confident, the man writing this is certain. Confidence is a posture. Certainty is something earned through loss.
When I admitted my defeat and told her I was giving up on us, she was genuinely hurt. A pain I have never seen cross anyone's face and never want to see again. In that moment I swore I would never again be the source of that pain. I am not going to describe the moment in detail because some things belong only to the people that have lived them.
I see her every now and again but stay silent about my love. Not because I have stopped feeling or because my love for her has diminished. It's because I understand something the first version of me never paused long enough to grasp. Love without restraint is just appetite. It takes what it wants and calls it devotion. I am not ready. I know that with the same certainty that I know my own name.
I am enrolled in school at forty years old. I am rebuilding life from ashes. I am learning, daily, how to be a man whose presence in someone's life is a net positive rather than a beautifully exhausting storm.
There is a particular kind of love that chooses restraint before indulgence. Not as defeat, but as respect. It say, I see you clearly enough to know you deserve more than I can offer you today. That kind of love is harder to carry than the loud kind. A love that simply sits with you at three in the morning when the quiet gets heavy and expects nothing in return. That is where I live now. In that particular silence. Looking back at lessons I missed and deriving meaning.
I have learned that loving someone in a way that doesn't take, but honors, is worth fighting for. I've learned that holding this kind of love without breaking it requires consideration, compassion, patience, and the understanding that love isn't measured by what I feel or need in the moment, but by the care I offer freely. Some lessons don't return what was lost. They return what was never yours to begin with: a clearer eye, a softer hand, a love that finally know the difference between holding on and holding still.
I don't know what will become of this version of me. I do know he is learning to love the way water moves. Not forcing. Not flooding. Just finding its way, slowly, toward something worth reaching, to be someone worth loving.
