AI Goes Local, Regulators Knock, and Wall Street Checks the Bill
1Day Agency Tech Brief · October 16, 2026
An 816-billion-parameter model that runs on two Macs. Subpoenas for two of the biggest AI labs. Bond investors getting nervous about the AI build-out. Here are the stories from the last 48 hours that matter if you build software.

1. Meta and Apple team up to put a frontier-size open model on your desk
What happened: Meta released the weights of Muse Spark Open, a mixture-of-experts model with 816B total parameters (42B active) and a 1M-token context window. Meta built it with Apple so it runs on two 512GB M5 Ultra Mac Studios using Apple's MLX framework. Axios called it a "striking detente" between two longtime rivals. Why it matters: You no longer need a data center to run a model this big, just an expensive desk setup. There is one catch: the license requires a separate agreement for companies with more than $20M in annual revenue that serve the model as an AI service. Sources: Axios · AI News Online briefing
2. The FTC sends civil subpoenas to OpenAI and Anthropic
What happened: On Wednesday the U.S. Federal Trade Commission sent civil investigative demands to OpenAI and Anthropic. It is seeking documents on AI safety incidents, safeguards, marketing materials and privacy policies. OpenAI said it "will engage constructively with the FTC." The demands open an investigation; they are not findings of wrongdoing. Why it matters: The probe is framed around consumer protection, so how AI products are marketed as safe is now under scrutiny, not only how they behave. Sources: Axios · AI News Online briefing
3. AI's weak spot is debt, not demand
What happened: A selloff in the bonds and stock of the neocloud CoreWeave spread across the AI trade this week, and Axios described it as "a canary in the coal mine." In the same week, Anthropic told investors it was cash-flow positive in Q3, with revenue up nearly 50% from the prior quarter to $16.8B. AWS's CFO told Axios that AI spending is sustainable. Why it matters: The market is starting to separate AI that earns money from AI that only borrows it. Source: Axios
4. Perplexity open-sources SPACE, the sandbox behind its Computer agent
What happened: Perplexity released SPACE (Sandboxed Platform for Agentic Code Execution) under Apache 2.0. Each agent task runs in its own Firecracker microVM, and credentials and network access are managed outside the sandbox. Akamai has already launched it on its cloud. Why it matters: Safely isolating agents has gone from a research problem to free infrastructure that any team can deploy. Sources: Perplexity blog · GitHub: perplexityai/SPACE
5. Proofpoint will buy Varonis for $6.3B to secure data for AI
What happened: Thoma Bravo-owned Proofpoint agreed to acquire data-security company Varonis for $49.75 per share in cash, about $6.3B in total. That is a 52% premium to Varonis's share price before sale rumors began. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027. Why it matters: Controlling what AI agents can read inside a company is now a multibillion-dollar category. Sources: Proofpoint press release · WSJ

Open models running on a desk mean a small business can have private AI without sending its data to someone else's cloud. Sandboxes like SPACE and deals like Proofpoint–Varonis show that permissions and isolation are now part of the product. And the FTC is asking how AI is marketed, so "safe" has to be something you can show, not a slogan.
That's how we build Yvion: ERP, CRM and user monitoring in one system, with AI applied to real workflows, clear access controls, and a working version in days, not quarters. Spend less on hype and more on shipping.
