The legendary "one more bug" lie that's older than version control itself. Every developer knows that fixing "just one more bug" is like saying you'll have "just one potato chip." Fast forward 84 years and you're still knee-deep in spaghetti code, wondering where your youth went. The project manager is still optimistically putting "almost done" on the sprint report while the codebase has evolved into its own sentient entity with trust issues.

Client said "can we make it look more modern" on a call yesterday and I just sat there for a second because I never know what to do with that one.
It's not a bad note but not a design note either.. Nobody who says "modern" can tell you what modern actually looks like. I've asked. They point at someone else's site and say "like that" but what they're really saying is "that company looks like they have their stuff together and I want to feel that way too."
I used to just go tweak stuff in Figma when I got this note. Make things cleaner. Whatever I thought modern meant that week. Didn't work. They'd come back and say it still felt off, obviously, because the design wasn't the problem.
Anyway I don't have a clean takeaway here. I think the move is to just stop and ask "what feels off" instead of trying to fix it.
Yes, modern has many shades. It can be micro interactions, minimalist/ maximalist layout, cool gradients, abstract shapes, subtle/heavy contrast.
Sometimes, it can even mean whatever the category leader is doing at the time.

I see SaaS companies make the same mistakes in their websites.
They either get too cute with the heading, over design with colors/animations, or have vague jargon making up their copy.
If someone is looking for tools to solve their problems and have to read your headline 3-4 times to understand it, they’re going to bail and look elsewhere.
The above-the-fold her section has one job: make the visitor feel understood in as little time as possible.
With these companies below, they are mentioning the benefit (save money/time) or mentioning who it’s for (problem solvers), all while the design is beautiful and simple.
These companies understand who they are, the problem they solve, and who their audience is.
When you have clarity like this it becomes easy to convert customers, because they feel like it’s the perfect product for them.
