The call came in on a Monday. A construction company's phone system had failed completely — outbound calls dropping mid-conversation, inbound calls not connecting at all. 27 employees, 38 numbers, business fully stopped. Every hour cost them contracts.
The obvious move is to migrate fast. The trap is that speed is not actually the hard requirement here.
Their old numbers were printed on invoices, quotes, and every piece of marketing they'd ever sent. Migrate cleanly and quickly, and you still lose every client who dials the number they already have.
So the plan wasn't "move to the new platform." It was: rebuild routing, extensions, recording and notifications on the new platform, then configure forwarding from all 38 old numbers into the new ones, then run quality checks on every single number before and after go-live.
1.5 weeks. Full capacity restored. Not one client lost to a number change.
In an emergency, the pressure is to fix the thing that's broken. The job is to also protect the thing that still works.
