I’m a director who makes campy, queer, slightly-unhinged comedies… and here’s what I’ve learned:
A laugh is always a surprise. If I’m not laughing while writing it… no one else will.
Comedy has a reputation of being scary to write because it requires:
- risking silence
- risking cringe
- risking someone not getting the joke
Most people aren’t afraid of failing — they’re afraid of looking stupid.
But that’s the entire job.
If you’re not willing to be ridiculous, the audience can’t relax enough to laugh.

This was insightful. I don’t think I would have fully understood this if I didn’t have kids at home, because with them, I don’t hesitate to be silly and do whatever it takes to make them laugh
